Assault on the Sky: Ultra Sierra Nevada Challenges the 3,000-Meter Wall

The thermometer at Granada's Plaza del Salón will register much more than just the ambient temperature this Friday at 10:00 PM; it will mark the start of an agonizing ascent toward the roof of the Iberian Peninsula. With a record-breaking 1,800 participants, the Unicaja Ultra Sierra Nevada is more than just an endurance race; it is an oxygen trap where the true rival isn't the clock, but the extreme altitude awaiting on the slopes of Pico Veleta.

The Vertical Hell of 5,480 Meters

The 100-kilometer ULTRA category presents a technical challenge that few European events can match. After an explosive city-level start, runners face a relentless profile, racking up an elevation gain that shreds quadriceps before reaching the critical point: crossing the 3,000-meter mark. At that altitude, performance drops by 15%, and every stride on the single track becomes a battle against hypoxia. There is no room for drafting or conservative strategies; here, glycogen management and hydration at the Beas de Granada and Quéntar aid stations will decide who makes it to the Pradollano station in one piece.

Clash of Titans on Spring Snow

Following the victory of Frenchman Cédric Chavet last year, all eyes are on the local runners' ability to reclaim the throne on terrain that, according to the latest reports, features spring snow conditions: hard and treacherous at dawn, soft and energy-sapping by midday. This factor will be decisive not only in the Ultra but also in the 74km TRAIL, where the initial leg-breaker from Cenes de la Vega usually takes its toll before the final big climb.

The tension continues into Saturday and Sunday with the MARATÓN (already sold out) and the MEDIA. In these shorter distances, the pace will be frantic from the first kilometer, as runners look to avoid hitting the wall on the ramps most exposed to the Granada sun. With the Andalusian Ski Mountaineering Championship running in parallel, the mountains will become a cauldron of watts and red-lined heart rates this weekend, where only those who master the transition from asphalt to high-mountain technical chaos will earn their finisher's medal.
