The Roar of the Ballon d’Alsace Marks the Return of the Triathlon du Lion

The Roar of the Ballon d’Alsace Marks the Return of the Triathlon du Lion

The legend has awakened and it’s taking no prisoners. After a decade-long absence from the roadbooks, the mythical Ballon d’Alsace returns this weekend as the ultimate judge of the Gueule du Fauve (L). This isn’t just another course change; it’s the recovery of Belfort’s purest DNA, demanding triathletes to summit at 1,247 meters after a 9-kilometer climb that will shatter the rhythm of anyone who was too optimistic during the swim at Lake Malsaucy.

The 90-kilometer bike leg, featuring 1,300 meters of elevation gain, turns into a true leg-breaker where watt management will be the only guarantee to avoid arriving empty at T2. Local veterans know that you don’t just climb the Ballon d’Alsace—you survive it. The technical descent towards Sermamagny will test the handling skills of the specialists before they lace up their shoes for the final half-marathon through the trails of the presqu'île.

A 'Sold Out' Event in Record Time

Expectations are sky-high. The organizers have hung the 'sold out' sign across all distances, from the explosive Coup de patte (S) to the demanding Rugissante (M), confirming that the Triathlon du Lion has reclaimed its status as a must-attend event on the European calendar. With over 2,000 bibs assigned, the density of regional and national-level athletes ensures an all-out battle from the very first strokes.

Keep an eye on the weather, which in this part of France is notoriously fickle in May. Variable conditions are forecast, which could turn the run course—a 100% nature trail around the lake—into heavy ground if the rain makes an appearance. Those looking for drafting in the permitted sections of the shorter distances must stay alert to the wind gusts that typically sweep through the valley.

This year, the event also debuts an inclusive facet with the joëlette aquathlon, integrating para-sports into the heart of the competition. Everything is ready at the nautical base for the roar of the Lion of Belfort to be heard once again with its former strength.
