The 'Plateau of Death' to Decide the Regional Crown in Oropesa

The 'Plateau of Death' to Decide the Regional Crown in Oropesa

It’s not the total elevation gain keeping the favorites awake this Saturday in Oropesa del Mar, but rather watt management across the treacherous Cabanes plateau. The fifth edition of the Mediterranean Epic Triathlon arrives with high stakes, serving as the Valencian Community’s Long Distance Regional Championship—an incentive that has sent tensions soaring in the transition area long before the first triathlete hits the water at Playa de Les Amplàries.

The Wind Factor on the Plateau

The bike leg, spanning 176 kilometers for the Full-distance warriors and 84 for the Half, hides a tactical trap. After a steady 15-kilometer climb, riders face a 30-kilometer plateau of false flats and rollers. At this point, drafting is strictly prohibited, and officials are known to be ruthless. Veterans know that burning too many matches on the initial climb to shave off a few seconds is the perfect recipe for bonking monumentally when the crosswinds punish the aero position during the third lap of the circuit.

A Duel of Watts and Asphalt

With over 1,400 participants across all categories, the spotlight is on the battle for the regional title. A high-intensity duel is expected, where the key lies in the T2 transition: dismounting the TT bike with enough leg speed to tackle a flat but psychologically grueling four-lap marathon along the seafront. The heat radiating off the Oropesa asphalt often turns the run into a survival test where athletes risk hitting the wall long before the 30-kilometer mark.

While the long-distance specialists fight for honor and ranking points on Saturday, the tone shifts radically on Sunday with the Sprint and Olympic events. In these short-course races, where drafting is permitted, the strategy is the polar opposite: explosive swims and full-gas pelotons where any positioning error before the final transition can end podium hopes. Organizers have reinforced the aid stations, fully aware that with the Mediterranean already warming up, hydration will dictate who breaks the tape and who ends up walking to the finish line.
