Laura Philipp breaks her silence in the technical hell of Aix-en-Provence

World champion Laura Philipp hasn't come to Provence to stroll through lavender fields; she’s here to prove that the hospital is now a blurred memory. After a season start marred by gastric and back issues that forced her under the knife, the German headlines a star-studded field at IRONMAN 70.3 Aix-en-Provence. This fifth stop of the Pro Series raises the European curtain this Sunday with a technical aggressiveness that leaves no room for error.

Clash of titans in the Sainte-Victoire massif

The bike leg, a true 90-kilometer leg-breaker through the Pays d'Aix, will be the ultimate judge. With defending champion Kristian Blummenfelt absent, bib number one goes to Rico Bogen. The young German prodigy and current world champion arrives with his teeth bared after setting the fastest bike split in Marbella. It won't be easy: pure wattage specialists like Rudy Von Berg and Kristian Høgenhaug, fresh from shattering records in Texas, will look to suffocate the pack right from T1.

The home turf factor and French resistance

The French armada is playing at home and knows every corner of the technical descent into Aix. Marjolaine Pierré, the defending champion, seeks the double against an India Lee who arrives in peak form. In the men's field, Pierre Le Corre is the great local hope following his stratospheric long-distance debut in New Zealand. His ability to maintain anaerobic threshold paces during the final half marathon—a three-lap circuit through the Parc de la Torse—will be crucial to stop the German powerhouses from sealing the race before even putting on their running shoes.

With 2,500 Pro Series ranking points at stake and three coveted slots for the Nice World Championship, managing hydration under the Provençal sun and avoiding bonking on the slopes of the Col de la Cingle will make the difference between the podium and the back of the pack. The 113-kilometer distance, also available in Relay format for teams, stands out this year as one of the fastest and most tactical of the last decade.
