Hochkönig Ultraks: Pure Skyrunning Defies Verticality in Maria Alm

Hochkönig Ultraks: Pure Skyrunning Defies Verticality in Maria Alm

The Tyranny of Elevation Gain in the Berchtesgaden Alps

The stopwatch doesn't lie, and the Golden Trail National Series radar is locked onto the 2,663 meters of positive vertical gain packed into the mere 35 kilometers of the HK30-EXTREME. This isn't your typical marathon distance; it’s a technical slaughterhouse on limestone rock that will test the lactate threshold of Europe’s elite in Maria Alm this weekend. The headline isn't the mileage, but the savage verticality defining this event, where Friday’s Vertical-Race will act as a true litmus test, forcing runners to conquer 1,080 meters of climbing in just 5.9 kilometers. Anyone without legs of steel to handle that average gradient of nearly 20% will be starting Saturday’s endurance events already in the red.

The technical focus lies in managing the loose scree and exposed ridges of the Salzburg Alps. While the HK70 presents itself as a survival test with its 4,150 meters of total elevation gain, the real spectacle of speed and agility will unfold in the HK20. In this half marathon, technical single track specialists will look to shatter the course record, taking advantage of terrain conditions that—following recent rains in the Bayern region—promise heavy mud sections that will hamper traction on the most explosive climbs. Salomon and Dynafit athletes have already been spotted scouting key sections, fully aware that a mistake in outsole compound choice could cost precious minutes on the technical descents.

Strategy and Power in the Hochkönig Massif

The HK48, with its 2,940 meters of climbing, remains the flagship distance for runners looking to transition into ultra-trail without losing their top-end speed. The course layout is a genuine leg-breaker that never lets you find a rhythm; it’s a constant gear-shifting battle where transitions between dense forest and alpine rock demand brutal adaptability. For the less experienced, the 10-kilometer HK-Sprint offers a fast entry point, but it’s no walk in the park: 310 meters of gain over that distance forces heart rates near the max from the very first meter. The stage is set for one of the most technical stops on the continental calendar, where the mountain always has the final word on who claims the throne in Maria Alm.
